| It is yet another incredible day on Fire Island. For those who chose to stay out last week or this week the weather has been amazing. This has always been my favorite time of year. Unfortunately it is also the time to be planning for the end of the season. Call to schedule the closing of your home as soon as you know that you will no longer need water or electric. If you like to prolong the season just remember that November 1st is the limit on carefree exposre to the elements. After that you must watch the weather closly as a dip in temps below freezing can occur at any time putting the plumbing at risk for freeze damage. Thinking of air conditioning for next summer? How about an automatic irrigation system for your garden or deck plantings? Now is the time to set it up in order to avoid the spring craziness. Also any upgrades to your plumbing or appliances should be planned now. Give us a call to discuss. |

Another day in paradise

It is Thursday morning with a bit of fog, and overcast. It is supposed to rain (very few of them this year)but then a rainy day is a perfect day for sitting by the fireplace and reading a favorite author to the patter of rain drops on the roof.
Don't use your fireplace for lack of firewood? Why not have us install some gas logs. The gas logs today are quite realistic, and can even offer decorative options like river rocks, and various shapes. Remote controls make putting danceing flames in your fireplace as easy as a click of a button.
I had someone ask this morning if you can leave soda in the house over the winter. We have had some fairly mild winters but you can't anticipate what the coming winter will bring. Anything that has water as a base; soda, canned veggies, condiments etc. are at risk of freezing. When that happens the container can burst leaving a gooey mess or worse. Toss that stuff out. Soda beer and wine can be given away. If you really feel you must keep it put a couple garbage can liners in a garbage can, place the stuff in that and tie it shut. Don't put it in the shower or sink as if it bursts there, it will continue to the drain and likely will do it again damaging your winterized plumbing. Most of the time after you have gone through a lot of trouble and put you're home at risk, you come out in the spring and throw it away anyway. The soda, wine, and beer is outdated and tastes funny, the condiments are discolored and bland, it just doesn't make sense.
Well the calls are starting to come in with requests to close up the house. With the weather being as good as it has been it seems a shame to not take advantage of this great place. On the other hand if you are done and have moved on to other things it is best to get your house closed for the winter. If while the house is unoccupied a leak should develope, even a small one, a lot of damage can occur.
Sorry I haven't said anything lately. It is finally starting to look like fall. Houses are being shut down, stores are closed during the week. It is both sad and good. It is time to move to the next phase of existance on Fire Island. Hopefully you have planned on the close up of your house before the soon to come first freeze. If we can be of any help guiding you on what to do please don't hesitate to call.
We are busy closing them up for the winter now. As nice as the weather is, to many, it is time to move on to other pursuits. If you are concerned with your beach home being un-attended over the winter, sign up for our winter watch program. We will do a perimeter walk around once a week, and log it for your records. If we find a door or window open we will secure it. If we see anything suspicious we will notify the police as your agent. For only $150.00 for December, January, and Febuary (and a few weeks before/after dependant on time and need)it comes out to about $10.00 a week. If you check with your insurance company it may even pay for itself.
Winter is here and it arrived with a vengence. We went from what seemed like the warmest fall ever to never ending cold without any transition. Several homes had some freeze damage as folks tried to hang on to the warmth that had been the norm. The leason being when November arrives it is time to drain any and all exposed plumbing. You never know when the weather will change and we all know how good the weather industry is in their predictions.
Well it is 2008, there hasn't been any comments from any visiters. I will likely only come back periodically until that changes. I am trying to get a section on the website to put pictures of goings on around the Pines this winter. Haven't had time to discuss with website modification people until today hopefully in the next couple weeks there will be something different to look at. Don't forget if you want to contact us right away we can be reached at 631-597-6622, or e-mailed at doug@cflafountaine.com.
CHEROKEE WISDOM:
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said, "my son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.
One is evil. It is prejudice, anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, lies, false pride, superiority, and self promotion.
The other is good. It is peace, respect, acceptance, hope, patience, helpfullness generosity, truth, compassion, and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather
"Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "the one you feed."
Nobody has come to visit...We have completed another draining season, and the winter looks quiet. Not much work around, but still optimistic. I only check sparsly now, so if you would like to get a discussion going let me know via e-mail (doug@cflafountaine.com) and I'll make a point of checking regularly.
